Intelligent product design requires incorporating environmental thinking from the beginning of a process.
Steelcase was the 1st company in the office furniture industry to apply the expertise of the Life Cycle thinking in the design of new products, in 2000. By understanding where and how a product is made, we can identify opportunities to make it use less energy and reduce its waste and environmental impact.
Since 2000 our eco-design policy leads us to :
- Ensure our products contain the highest possible recycled content
- Reduce the number of components for quick and easy disassembly and effective recycling
- Ensure the absence of heavy metals or harmful substances (no PVC, Chrome 6 replaced by Chrome 3)
- Shrink packaging volumes to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions
- Ensure the recyclability of our products (materials choice and design for disassembly)
We build on this experience to continuously improve the environmental performance of our products.
Since 2004, we work on packaging reduction. Today, 70% of our task chairs are shipped in an Eco-Smart packaging. Continuous improvement in the area of packaging optimization led us to design the Reply chair that can be shipped in 4 pieces and assembled in less than 50 seconds . The Eco-Smart++ solution allows us to triple the number of seating products in a truckload compared to a fully assembled chair. It also results in:
- less packaging waste
- better transportation efficiency with lower energy consumption and C02 emissions.
